Annotate Text

Quote, highlight, comment

Quote is free and works via right-click or the selection toolbar. Highlight and Comment require Pro and add visual marks and private annotations.

Three ways to capture selected text from a page. Quote is free. Highlight and Comment require Pro.

Selection toolbar

The selection toolbar appears when you select text on a page, but only while Filed is active. "Active" means the main toolbar is visible on the page, or you triggered highlight mode with ⌘⇧H / Ctrl+Shift+H without opening the full toolbar.

If you select text without Filed active, nothing appears. This is intentional: Filed doesn't interrupt every text selection on every page.

Quote

Free

Save selected text as a quote block in Notion.

Via right-click: Select text → right-click → Save quote to Filed. Saves immediately, no confirmation. The selection, page title, and source URL go directly to Notion.

Via selection toolbar: Select text while Filed is active → click Quote in the toolbar. Behavior depends on context:

  • If the main toolbar is open: saves instantly. The orb confirms.
  • If the side panel is open: a Quote block appears in the panel. Edit the title or add a note before clicking Save.

Multi-passage accumulation: When the side panel is open, successive selections append to the same Quote block rather than creating a new one. The orb flashes "Passage added" to confirm each append. Build a single quote block with multiple passages before saving.

What lands in Notion: The selected text as a quote block, with the source URL and page title.

Highlight

Pro

Mark selected text visually on the page and save it with your chosen color.

How it works:

  1. Select text while the toolbar or ⌘⇧H is active
  2. Click Highlight in the selection toolbar (or press H)
  3. The text is marked with your highlight color immediately, visible on the page while you're on it
  4. The side panel opens automatically with a Highlight block added

The highlight mark is ephemeral: it exists only for this tab session and disappears on reload. It's a visual aid, not a permanent page modification.

Highlight color: Controlled in Settings → Highlight color. Options: yellow, blue, green, red, purple, orange, pink, gray. The color also sets the formula label style in Notion.

What lands in Notion: The highlighted passage as a callout block (default) or quote block, depending on your Default layout setting.

Comment

Pro

Attach a note to selected text without adding a visible mark to the page.

How it works:

  1. Select text while the toolbar or ⌘⇧H is active
  2. Click Comment in the selection toolbar
  3. The side panel opens with a Comment block added
  4. Type your comment, then click Save

Unlike Highlight, Comment adds no visible mark to the page.

What lands in Notion: Depends on your Notion plan setting (Settings → Notion plan):

  • Free Notion: comment posted as a page-level comment
  • Paid Notion: comment posted as an inline block comment, attached to the exact text block

Highlight mode shortcut

⌘⇧H / Ctrl+Shift+H: activates Filed's text selection mode on the current page without opening the full toolbar. Use this when you want to highlight or quote text without showing the toolbar UI.
